Title: "Repentance"
In direct opposition to the teaching of most churches of the day, Walter Scott believed that people had to believe in Jesus’ message about God’s love for sinners before they repented of their sins. Walter Scott believed that only after confessing faith in the message of God’s love could people then take the next step to salvation, that of repentance. For Scott, an understanding of God’s love would reveal to people the error of their ways and motivate them to change.

A man wants Jesus to command that the man’s brother divide the family inheritance with him. Jesus responds with a parable about a rich man who tears down his barns to build larger ones so that he can store all of his grain. This man thinks that everything is fine until God demands this man’s life that very night. God responds to this man that he has built up his possessions but they won’t do him any good in heaven.

Jesus appoints seventy “new disciples” and commissions them to go out to test the waters for receiving the Gospel message. He doesn’t promise a pretty picture for their journey. The seventy return and share that they were well received and were able to chase away demons. Jesus responds that they shouldn’t really be thankful for that but for that fact that their names are written in heaven.

Jesus has begun his journey to Jerusalem and encounters people along the way who have closed their hearts to Jesus in various ways. They have the freedom to follow Jesus, but have become “slaves” to various parts of their lives which prevents them from following Jesus.

King Ahab decides that he wants his neighbor’s vineyard for his own and asks for this vineyard but is refused. His wife, Jezebel, develops a plot to “acquire” this vineyard which leads to the neighbor’s death. Elijah accuses Ahab of his crimes and predicts Ahab’s death and demise.

Title: "The Sound of Silence"
Jezebel has threatened Elijah with taking his life in retaliation for killing the prophets of Baal. Elijah runs away but God comes to Elijah. There is a strong wind, but God is not in the wind. There is an earthquake, but God is not in the earthquake. There is a fire, but God is not in the fire. God comes to Elijah in the silence.

Title: “The jar will be not emptied”
This is the story of Elijah who has been commanded by God to travel to Zarephath and to await for a widow to feed him. Elijah travels to this city and does meet the widow. The widow explains that she does not have enough food for him and her family. Elijah gives her the good news of the promises of God.

This is the story of Paul and Silas. Paul sees a young slave girl who has the spirit of divination. Paul tells the spirit to leave her and her masters bring Paul and Silas up on charges. They are taken to prison and set free by an earthquake. The jailer almost kills himself because he believes that the prisoners have escaped. Paul tells him that everyone is still there and the jailer is brought into faith.

This is the story of Lydia. Paul has a dream one night to go to Macedonia and to proclaim the good news to them. When they arrive at the city gates, they meet Lydia, a woman who worships God. God opens her heart to the word of God and she in turns opens her home to Paul and his followers.

Jesus appears to seven disciples once again by the Sea of Tiberias and invites them to cast their net on the other side of the boat. They realize that this person is Jesus. They come ashore and have breakfast with Jesus. Jesus asks Peter three times “Do you Love Me?” and for three times, Peter answers yes.

Jesus appears to the disciples after the resurrection and he shows them his hands and his side. Thomas is the only disciple who is not there with the group. This story is about the new creation through the Holy Spirit and moving all the disciples from unbelief to belief.

Scripture: John 20: 1-18
Title: “I have seen the Lord!”
This is John’s account of the resurrection. Mary Magdalene comes to the tomb early in the morning and sees that the stone has been rolled away. She runs to Simon Peter and the other disciple and brings them back to the tomb. They discover that the tomb is empty and leave. Mary stays behind and encounters the risen Lord and shares the Good News with the disciples.

Scripture: Luke 19: 28-40
Title: “Blessed is the King”
This is Luke’s account of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Jesus enters the city on a colt and met by a crowd of people who spread their cloaks on the road. The disciples begin to say, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” Some of the Pharisees wanted Jesus to tell his disciples to be quiet, but Jesus says that even if they were quiet, the stones would shout out.

Jesus has come to Bethany to the home of Lazarus whom he has already risen from the dead. Jesus is greeted by Mary who anoints and washes Jesus’ feet. Judas, who is unhappy with such waste of rich perfume, speaks out against this act. Jesus reminds the disciples that his time is drawing near.

Jesus boards Simon’s boat and begins to teach the crowd that has gathered around the lake Gennesaret. Jesus tells Simon to put his nets down in the water again, but Simon explains that they have been fishing all night and didn’t catch anything. Simon follows Jesus’ command and their nets begin to break because there are so many fishes. This is the beginning of the disciples’ ministry with Jesus.

Hannah takes Samuel to the temple as she promises God. This is her prayer of thanksgiving for God’s many blessings for her and her family. Hannah’s prayer is reminiscent of Mary’s prayer when she hears the good news from the angel.

“The power or prayer”
This is the story of Hannah. She is a wife with no sons. She continues to pray for a son but there is no hope. One day while visiting the temple, Eli, the priest, noticed Hannah and scolded her for being drunk in the House of the Lord. Hannah explains that she is not drunk but praying for a son. Eli tells her to go because God had heard her prayer.

This is the story of Ruth and Naomi. Naomi’s husband and two sons have died and Naomi tells the two daughter-in-laws to go back to their homeland. Ruth refuses and declares that she will stay with Naomi. Her declaration must be understood as an act of khesed (showing love and loyalty over and beyond what is considered normal or expected).*

“Not to be Served But to Serve”
James and John ask Jesus to sit at Jesus’ side in his glory. Jesus asks them if they truly understand what they are asking. They answer yes but Jesus knows that they do not understand what he is really asking of them. Jesus reminds them again of his vision and mission for his ministry on earth.

“What do you want me to do for you?”
Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho as a large crowd was leaving the city. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus for healing. Jesus tells some in the crowd to bring Bartimaeus to him and asks what he wants. Bartimaeus asks to be able to see again. Jesus sends him on his way, sight regained and healed.

"Faith in Action"
Jesus returns to Capernaum and people begin to gather. Some people brought a paralyzed man to Jesus to be healed but they were unable to reach Jesus. They decided to cut a hole in the roof and lower the man in to Jesus. Jesus tells the man to stand up and take his mat but there were many in the crowd who questioned Jesus’ technique.

"Then Who Can be Saved?"
A young man approaches Jesus and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life? Jesus explains that he must obey the commandments and the young man explains that he has done all that. Then Jesus continues to explain that he must sell all his possessions and follow Jesus. The young man goes away, sadden by what Jesus says. Jesus explains to his disciples that through God all things are possible.
